What is a fire damper?
A fire damper is a passive fire protection device fitted where ductwork passes through a fire-rated wall, floor or ceiling. In normal use it sits open and lets air move freely through the ventilation system. In a fire it closes, restoring the integrity of the fire compartment so that flame and smoke cannot travel through the ductwork into the next part of the building.
How do fire dampers work?
Most fire dampers are held open by a fusible link that melts at around 72°C, releasing a spring or curtain that snaps the damper shut. Motorised dampers are driven closed by an actuator wired to the fire alarm or building management system. Both types depend on moving parts that can seize, corrode or be obstructed — which is exactly why they have to be tested rather than assumed to work.

Why fire dampers are essential to your building's fire strategy
Compartmentation is the backbone of almost every fire strategy in the UK. Walls and floors are built to hold a fire in one part of a building for long enough to let people out and let the fire service in — and every duct that passes through those walls is a hole in that defence unless a working fire damper is protecting it.
A damper that is painted shut, obstructed by insulation, missing its fusible link or simply never tested offers no protection at all. Because dampers sit hidden above ceilings and inside risers, that failure is invisible until the day it matters.
